All month long SME South Africa will highlight young entrepreneurs, innovators and influencers who are shaping the future, as part of our Youth Month 2017 coverage. Follow #YouthAmplified on Twitter and Facebook to join the conversation.
Nothing better illustrates the creativity and innovation that the youth has, and how they have successfully grabbed the opportunities offered by social media platforms, than the incredible rise of the YouTube influencer.
Influencers are online content creators who have succeeded in amassing a large social media following (either YouTube, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook), and are successfully leveraging this popularity to become brand ambassadors – and enjoying the big bucks that come with it as a result.
While the phenomenon is still relatively new in South Africa, the YouTube influencer market in the US and Europe is more established and lucrative.
Some of the world’s biggest YouTube influencers like Swedish comedian and video-producer PewDiePie (real name Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg) who has over 55 million subscribers and American Jenna Marbles (real name Jenna Mourey) with over 16.9 million subscribers, earn millions of dollars from their YouTube content.
South African YouTubers are also beginning to reap the rewards of their online success. They are now collaborating with brands like Takealot, Checkers, Steers and even international clothing brands like Topman, and becoming household names.
Kirsty Sharman, a marketer for South African online influencer platform Webfluential says what South African YouTubers lack in numbers they make up in influence.
“These YouTubers are storytellers, personalities, and trusted advisors to many South Africans because they make content that people care about, content people want to watch. A recent study by Google uncovered that 4 out of 10 millennials actually think that their favourite creator understands them better than their close friends – as a result, these YouTube creators have incredible influence.
In celebration of Youth Day – We take a look at South African YouTubers who are using their voices and are building their brands at the same time.
