what's your brand story

If you want to build a successful business, a strong brand story deserves to be a genuine priority, it is what helps people connect with your brand and what ultimately builds customer loyalty.

Inspiring emotion

What is a brand story, exactly? A brand’s history is a meaningful part of the story, but it is not the whole of it. A brand story is a cohesive narrative encompassing the facts and feelings created by your business. Unlike traditional advertising, which shows and tells, a genuine story needs to inspire an emotional reaction.

“Brand story” can sound like corporate buzzword territory, but it has become genuinely more important as customer behaviour has shifted. Customers increasingly look for, and stay loyal to, companies that feel authentic, that seem to have their best interests at heart, and that take a more personalised approach to how they do business.

A brand story communicated clearly and cohesively makes it considerably easier for customers to get behind that brand. Customers are human, after all, and are more likely to choose a product from a company that inspires some emotional connection than from a business with no discernible personality.

Want customer loyalty? Tell a good story

Consider two companies selling shoes. Company A shares its history across its website and social platforms, the people who make the shoes, why the product is genuinely good, and what the company’s mission actually is. This gets communicated in different forms, a catchphrase, the imagery used, the About Us page, but the same underlying sentiment runs through every customer touchpoint.

Company B simply lists shoes for sale, with no reference to heritage, values or mission. Company A will, in almost every case, make a considerably more meaningful impression on a prospective customer.

Where to start

Start by integrating your business’s core values and heritage into a genuine story about your “why”, the actual reason your business exists and the difference it aims to make for the people it serves.

A few components worth building into any solid brand story:

  • Understanding your product properly, not just its features but what it genuinely does for the customer.
  • Understanding your audience, who they are and what they actually value.
  • Being consistent, the same story told the same way across every channel and touchpoint.

Strong, consistent messaging humanises a business, helping build real relationships and genuine emotional engagement with customers. How well you do this directly influences whether customers choose your business over a competitor’s, people gravitate toward brands that treat them as a genuine human being rather than another transaction.

Brand stories can and should evolve. Track how your customers are changing and adjust your story accordingly, but never lose sight of the foundational core that makes your brand genuinely memorable in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a brand story?

A cohesive narrative encompassing the facts and feelings your business creates, going beyond a simple company history to genuinely inspire an emotional reaction rather than just informing.

Why does a brand story matter for customer loyalty?

Customers increasingly favour businesses that feel authentic and personalised. A clear, consistent brand story makes it easier for customers to connect emotionally, which directly drives loyalty over competitors offering a similar product.

Should my brand story change over time?

Yes, track how your customers and their needs evolve, and adjust your story accordingly. Just never abandon the foundational core that makes your brand recognisable and memorable.

What are the core components of a strong brand story?

Genuinely understanding your product, understanding your audience, and maintaining consistency across every channel and customer touchpoint.

How is a brand story different from traditional advertising?

Traditional advertising shows and tells customers about a product. A brand story aims to inspire a genuine emotional reaction, building connection rather than simply informing.

Building a story worth telling

A strong brand story is not a marketing luxury, it is a genuine driver of customer loyalty and differentiation. Build yours around a real “why”, stay consistent across every touchpoint, and let it evolve with your customers without losing its foundational core.
