Introduction

GetSmarter is an online learning platform which provides a wide range of short courses. The company was founded in Cape Town, South Africa. Its first online short course was Wine Evaluation which was done in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch.

GetSmarter has partnered with +18 local and international universities. Some of the universities include Harvard University, IE University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, London School of Economics and Political Science, and the University of Cape Town.

Courses on GetSmarter are categorised as Artificial intelligence, Business Management and Strategy, Data Science and Analysis, Design and Creative, Digital Transformation and Disruptive Technology amongst many others.

GetSmarter Business-to-Business Courses

GetSmarter has an offer which allows businesses to enrol employees in various courses. You can pick any course for your team or work with a GetSmarter account manager to help you pick the right course for your team.

Your account manager will provide you with a comprehensive performance report which showcases how your employees are doing on their course. The report includes progress, grades and overall performance.

Once they have completed the course, they will receive a digital certificate from the university providing the course.

Some courses are endorsed by professional bodies and may contribute to your employee’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, Continuing Education Units (CEU), Professional Development Units (PDU) or such learning units as detailed on the course page(s).

How to Apply for GetSmarter Courses

To apply for a course on GetSmarter, you must first find the course you want in the category. Each course has a duration period which does not exclude the orientation time. Once you have chosen the course you want, you will need to sign up for it.

When you sign-up for a course you will be required to enter some personal details. These include full name, date of birth and e-mail address. Additionally, you will need to create a password for your GetSmarter profile.

GetSmarter App

GetSmarter has an app for its students available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. You can use the app to update any personal information, download documents, upload course work and access learning content and discussion forums.

The GetSmarter app sends you notifications about the following events:

  • Assignment due dates.
  • Module releases.
  • Posts from forums that you are subscribed to.
  • When you have been tagged or mentioned in a forum post.

Pricing

Each GetSmarter course has its own cost. Courses can range from R 15 900 up to R 61 000 depending on the course topic. For example, tech courses like artificial intelligence are over R 40 000 while courses like data analysis start at R 15 900.

You can pay your course fees in full before the beginning of the course or choose to pay it through a payment plan. Not all courses have payment plans so it will depend on your course.

Payment plans are reserved for courses longer than 4 weeks. For courses that are 10 to 12 weeks long, GetSmarter offers a three-part payment plan. Courses longer than 12 weeks have a four-part payment plan.

The first instalment is due before the course start date. You can also speak to a GetSmarter Enrolment Advisor who will help explain the payment plans to you better.

When you pay for your course, you can pay online via GetSmarter’s secure payment gateway which supports Visa, Mastercard and American Express transactions.

You can make an electronic payment or deposit. Banking details will be provided to you if you choose one of these options. You can also use e-wallet, Google Pay and Apple Pay to pay for your course.
