Secha Capital Impact (SMEs)

Secha Capital, a Southern African investment impact firm, announced the first close of its second fund, Secha Capital Impact, a Southern Africa early-stage operations-focused impact private equity fund.

The ZAR400 million (US$30 million) Secha Capital Fund II will invest up to ZAR12 million (US$730,000) into established Southern African SMEs for significant minority equity stakes, according to DisruptAfrica.

The criteria include:

– Typical % ownership: 10-30%

– Sectors of interest: Agri, FMCG, business-enabling services

– Investment theme: Niche, growth verticals; large, dormant markets that can be re-invigorated

– Minimum revenue: R5-50million revenue with positive gross margins

Female-owned small business owners can share how they pivoted their businesses during the lockdown period and stand a chance to become one of the More Than You Expect Heroes.

Locally Yours Market – Port Elizabeth (All)

The Locally Yours Market initiative promotes handmade products made by residents of the Eastern Cape.

Consumers are encouraged to attend the market at The Tramways Building, 16 Lower Valley Road, Baakens Valley in Port Elizabeth. The market is held once a month – the next event is Wednesday 16 December from 1pm to 6pm; Thursday 17 December from 10am to 6pm; Friday 18 December from 10am to 8pm; Saturday 19 December 9am to 4pm.

To qualify, business owners will need to be in attendance at the market. They do not allow any copies of concepts or other brands unless under license to do so.

App Factory Internship Programme (Tech)

Graduates who can demonstrate their ability to code in C#, Java and C++ and are familiar with object-oriented principles can apply for this internship with the Tshimologong Precinct. Successful candidates will be paid a stipend for the duration of the internship.

The programme starts 4 January 2021, it will cover C#, ASP.NET Webforms, ASP.NET MVC, Angular, JavaScript and other relevant topics. You can email your CV and a covering letter to internship@tshimologong.joburg.

Sentech Hack the Future Challenge 2020 (Tech)

Innovative tech and digital solutions can be entered into the #SentechHackTheFuture hackathon. Stand a chance to win R200,000 in prize money.

The hackathon takes place between 16 – 18 November 2020. Individuals are allowed to register and will be placed on a team. Teams can register with 3-6 members.

The closing date for applications is 10 November 2020.

WWF & Sanlam Disaster and Agricultural Risk Innovation Challenge (All)

The competition aims to find ideas to improve disaster and agricultural risk management. The winner stands the chance to win a portion of R150k in prize money.

How it works

You can apply online by submitting a video of no longer than three minutes explaining your business and including the following:

– What does your product or solution aim to achieve?

– How does your product or solution change the way municipalities and agriculturalists are able to prepare for, respond to, mitigate and recover from disasters caused by fire, water or earth?

– How will you execute on this using the R150 000 prize money?

The deadline for online entries is 6 November 2020.

Individuals or teams can get an opportunity to test their idea before launching it into the market; grant funding is available for selected projects and there’s possible investment from industry partners.

TelkomONE Competition: #OpenUpTheIndustry (Entertainment)

TelkomONE is giving aspiring content producers, writers, videographers, photographers, presenters and actors an opportunity to win 1 of 3 contracts valued at R100 000.

This is an online resource for startup founders. Get access to the latest industry insights, startup tools and methodologies needed to take your business to the next level.

About the modules

The first course is called “Start your business”, and walks you through the founding stage of your startup; the second course, “Grow your business”, covers what’s needed after your startup finds its feet and is ready to scale up.

Course three, “Finance your business”, covers how to attract venture funding. The fourth course, “Your legal business“, is aimed at founders who want to learn more about the legal implications of setting up their business and getting their operations funded.
