Sammy Mhaule

Many years have passed since that first business endeavour selling ice cream in Thembisa. Fourteen-year-old Sammy Mhaule became a serial entrepreneur, establishing multiple brands like SkyRule drinks and THE KICKS BRAND, and even ventured into the property business for a while. Today, he is an award-winning business leader, mentor and contributor at Startup School South Africa and Township Entrepreneurs Alliance.

“I always had a passion for creating and innovating,” Mhaule shares. “Starting my own business allowed me the freedom to explore my ideas fully and pursue my vision without the constraints often found in traditional employment.”

Entrepreneurship through Sammy Mhaule’s Eyes

According to Mhaule, the most essential function of an entrepreneur is to solve problems. “Entrepreneurs identify challenges and provide innovative solutions, ultimately driving progress within their communities and industries.” This is more than a belief, it is something that Mhaule experienced intimately when his entrepreneurial journey began with a small side project that allowed him to connect with his community. “I believe entrepreneurship is a way to make a tangible impact on the community.”

He explains that every business he founded has shown him another vital part of the business world. “Each business taught me valuable lessons and helped refine my skills. For example, launching SkyRule Drinks introduced me to branding and marketing, while Kicks Sportswear opened my eyes to the apparel industry and customer demand.”

From Beverages to Kicking it in Sportswear

At the end of the previous decade, Mhaule founded SkyRule Drinks, a beverage company that brought a fresh twist to the market. Twyst offered a range of soft drinks that had fruity combinations such as red grape and blueberries, and apple and peach. His products gained nationwide recognition and were even listed in major retail chains.

Most recently, Mhaule founded THE KICKS BRAND, Mhaule’s international sportswear brand, which has offices in Lincoln, United Kingdom and Johannesburg, South Africa. “KICKS just opened its office in the UK and is exploring collaborations in sustainable fashion-focused food products.

“I plan to expand The Kicks Brand by introducing new product lines and leveraging technology to enhance customer experience. I also aim to explore international markets to grow our reach.

Switching industries, specifically from the beverage industry in South Africa to a multi-national fashion scene focused on sportswear like sneakers, seems like a huge jump. But for Mhaule, the change doesn’t seem so different.

“The beverage and sneaker industries are both dynamic and consumer-centric, which excites me. I chose fashion because of my passion for art and the growing demand for quality. I wanted to provide products that not only look good but also enhance performance.”

Entrepreneurship Meets Leadership

Although Mhaule now mostly resides in the UK, he stays connected through community projects and by supporting local entrepreneurs. “I’m involved in initiatives that provide resources and mentorship to help small businesses thrive in South Africa.”

One of these initiatives is the #1000JOBCREATION initiative. “It is progressing well!” Mhaule excitedly adds. “We’ve partnered with various organisations to create workshops and training programs aimed at equipping individuals with skills needed in the job market. The goal is to empower a thousand individuals to find sustainable employment.

“I’m also mentoring young entrepreneurs to help them navigate the business landscape. I also just joined the Chartwell speakers, allowing me to travel the world.”

Mhaule is a dedicated mentor and contributor at Startup School South Africa and the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance. As a sought-after keynote speaker, Mhaule shares his expertise on entrepreneurship, goal setting, and brand building.

When asked about advice for other entrepreneurs who struggle to see gaps in the market, he shares that it comes through feedback and experience. “Gaps are often identified through personal experiences and feedback from consumers. I encourage entrepreneurs to engage with their target audience and observe trends. Researching market reports and participating in industry events can offer insights into unmet needs.”

Readers can find THE KICKS BRAND sneakers on the official website, various e-commerce platforms and in their pop-up stores.
