
The 2nd Annual Township Economy Awards delivered a powerful celebration of township innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, honouring the trailblazers shaping South Africa’s local economies. Hosted in the City of Ekurhuleni, the Awards brought together community leaders, policymakers, creatives, entrepreneurs and ecosystem builders who continue to push for inclusive economic growth that starts at the grassroots level.
A Spectacular Opening and Cultural Showcase
The evening opened with a soulful performance by the Soweto Opera, followed by an energetic showcase from The Rising Phoenix Pantsula Crew. MC Hector Motivator guided the entire room through a journey of township rhythm, culture and movement.
A Decade of Impact and Transformation
Founder Bulelani Balabala reflected on TEA’s ten-year journey from a small idea to one of the most influential township empowerment platforms in the country.

Government Endorsement for Youth Enterprise Growth
Deputy Minister of Small Business Development, Honourable Rasaetja Jane Sithole, delivered an inspiring address focused on the boldness of South Africa’s youth entrepreneurs and the importance of programmes that truly meet their needs.
Celebrating Township Culture Through the Arts
Guests enjoyed a vibrant performance from the Sir Alba Arts Academy Marimba Group, followed by an electric set from the iconic Khuli Chana.
Partnerships Fuelling Economic Impact
This year’s Awards highlighted TEA’s growing partnership with Nedbank, which has supported more than 100 000 township entrepreneurs through skills programmes and funding pathways.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) reaffirmed its commitment to township development, calling TEA a strategic platform that aligns with its transformation goals and supports inclusive growth within communities.
Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Cllr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, praised Tembisa as a centre of creativity and resilience.
The W&RSETA CEO, Tom Mkhwanazi, confirmed their ongoing support of TEA’s work in youth and SMME development.
Skills, Collaboration and the Future of Township Enterprise
Nedbank’s Group Managing Executive, Andiswa Bata, encouraged entrepreneurs to collaborate, upskill consistently and apply the insights gained from the TEA Summit.
A highlight of the evening came from Delivery Ka Speed, last year’s triple award winner, which announced the expansion of its fleet to 200 vehicles.
