The inaugural Township Economy Awards 2024 ceremony recognised outstanding businesses and individuals making a positive impact in their communities. This prestigious award was the culmination of the 6th Annual Township Economy Summit, hosted by the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) in Tembisa, Gauteng. TEA is the driving force behind South Africa’s township and rural entrepreneurial ecosystem and has directly impacted over eighty thousand township entrepreneurs and five hundred township businesses over the last nine years. The summit took place on 21 and 22 November and the Township Economy Awards on 23 November.
With a sector valued at over R900 billion, the township economy continues to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and job creation. Events such as the Township Economy Summit and the Township Economy Awards highlight the achievements of black pioneers in this sector.
This year’s events joined township entrepreneurs, corporate leaders and government officials to explore actionable strategies, share success stories and address the unique challenges within South Africa’s vibrant township economy. Titled, “Inclusive Economic Future”, it focused on seven key industries driving growth in townships: the Green Economy eKasi, Manufacturing, Transportation, Backroom Market eKasi, Retail and Agriculture as well as Technology and Innovation.
