Running robust marketing for your business can be very costly. It means hiring people who can create content – written, photographed and video – and paying for websites and design platforms that require expertise and time that most businesses don’t have. However, thanks to the advancement of technology, all this can be done for free and usually requires no expert interference.
According to the 2026 South African Social Media Landscape Report, 73% of organisations now use artificial intelligence (AI) in their marketing activities, while 72% use ChatGPT for content creation.
This highlights the benefits of leveraging AI for various marketing activities. For small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), leveraging the right AI tools can significantly enhance your digital marketing and cut costs.
In this article, we look at what AI tools for marketing are and their various use cases. We also list some of the free AI tools you can use for your business.
What are AI Tools for Marketing?
AI marketing tools are software applications powered by AI that use data, machine learning, and natural language processing to automate tasks, predict customer behaviour, and generate personalised content at scale.
AI in Marketing Use Cases
Marketing teams use AI tools in a wide range of customer-facing and internal applications. This can include optimising social media posts, e-mail marketing and content marketing efforts. Some examples of ways in which enterprises are using AI for marketing include:
Audience Segmentation
AI helps businesses intelligently and effectively divide up their customers by various characteristics, interests, and behaviours. This leads to enhanced targeting and more effective marketing campaigns, resulting in strong customer engagement and improved return on investment (ROI).
Content Generation
AI used for content generation can save marketing teams time and money by creating output such as blogs, marketing messages, copywriting materials, e-mails, subject lines, subtitles for videos, website copy and other types of content. Also, the technology can automatically translate content from one language to another or create multiple cohesive iterations of the same campaign materials across platforms.
Customer Service Assistants
Early AI-powered customer support tools included chatbots which are trained to interact with customers and answer common questions. Today, generative AI-powered assistants can interact with customers in natural language, no matter where they are on their customer journey, helping to resolve tickets quickly and increasing customer satisfaction.
E-commerce
AI enables businesses to improve their e-commerce programmes and digital marketing capabilities by providing them with a more nuanced understanding of their customer’s needs and buying habits, automating tasks and simplifying workflows. Technologies such as AI agents, which can continuously collect and analyse data, often power personalised recommendation engines on e-commerce sites by tracking user activity and generating products an individual is most likely to buy.
Predictive Analytics
Predictive analytics analyses historical data and forecasts future trends, helping marketers make data-driven decisions and optimise their workflows. By identifying customer behaviour patterns, AI predicts which products might perform well, optimises pricing strategies and improves lead scoring. Companies can use these insights to refine their marketing strategies, reduce customer churn and break into new markets based on customer demand.
Programmatic Advertising
Programmatic advertising is the automation of the purchasing and placement of ads on websites and applications. AI significantly enhances organisations’ abilities to conduct programmatic advertising by using customer history, preferences and context to deliver more relevant ads with higher conversion rates.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Deploying an AI solution to enhance SEO helps marketers increase page rankings and develop stronger strategies. AI can help marketers create and optimise content to meet constantly changing standards.
Sentiment Analysis
Sentiment analysis uses AI to evaluate customer opinions and emotions as expressed through social media, online reviews and customer feedback. For example, an AI agent can sift through vast amounts of textual data to extract underlying attitudes. By understanding audience sentiment, businesses can adjust their messaging, manage their reputation and respond proactively to customer concerns.
Workflow Automation
Leveraging the power of AI, marketers can streamline repetitive and time-consuming tasks, enabling them to focus on strategic initiatives. By automating processes like data entry, transcription and simple customer interactions, businesses improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. AI-powered tools also schedule content, manage social media posts and personalise communications, helping to ensure consistent engagement with customers.
Best Free AI Marketing Tools for SMEs
The following platforms are all free-to-use (up to a certain level) and offer various features which you can leverage for marketing efforts.
1. Copy.ai (Writing)
Copy.ai is an artificial intelligence-driven platform designed to automate content creation and go-to-market (GTM) workflows for sales, marketing, and revenue teams. On its free plan, the platform gives you 2 000 words a month. This covers at least four blogs or eight product descriptions.
Included in the free plan are more than templates covering social captions, press releases, meta descriptions, and value propositions. You get one user seat and the chat interface. What you don’t get: brand voice training, multi-step workflows, or team collaboration. Those features start at $49 per month.
The platform is best suited for small marketers or small teams publishing 2-3 times per week. It does not replace the need for a writer, but a strong prompt can provide copy that can be easily edited.
2. Google Ads and Meta (Ads and Analytics)
Paid advertising is one of the more expensive parts of marketing. Platforms like Google Ads and Meta offer AI-powered marketing ad engines that adjust bids automatically, prioritise people who are most likely to convert, and optimise ad creatives based on performance.
Both of these platforms make it easier to create ads and will automatically optimise click-through rates for you.
3. Mailchimp (E-mail Marketing)
Mailchimp still has one of the best free tiers in e-mail marketing. You get at least 500 contacts, 1 000 email sends per month, a drag-and-drop editor, basic templates, and AI-generated subject lines. The AI subject line feature analyses your email content and suggests variations ranked by predicted open rate.
It must be noted that the free tier includes Mailchimp branding in the footer. You don’t get automations (welcome sequences, abandoned cart flows, drip campaigns), A/B testing, or advanced segmentation.
Mailchimp’s free tier is ideal for early-stage companies still building their e-mail list.
4. Buffer (Social Media Scheduling)
Buffer offers a pretty good free tier for small marketing teams. You get three connected social channels (pick from Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, or Mastodon), 10 scheduled posts per channel, and access to Buffer’s AI writing feature for generating post ideas and captions.
Also, the platform has an AI writing feature. Simply give it a blog post URL or a product update, and it generates three to five social post variations sized for each platform.
Buffer is good for startups and small teams posting consistently on 2-3 platforms.
5. CapCut (Short-form Video Creation)
CapCut is ByteDance’s video editor, and the free tier includes auto-captions powered by speech recognition, background removal, AI-generated text overlays, templates sized for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts, and a library of royalty-free music.
Note that on the free plan, some premium templates carry watermarks, and cloud storage is limited. Most basic editing, captioning, and formatting ships without watermarks. CapCut is a great choice for short-form videos on social media. If your team creates Reels, TikToks, or YouTube Shorts, CapCut’s free tier replaces a paid video editor for the majority of use cases.
As you research more AI tools, you will find platforms that have a combination of features you can use. Ensure that any free tier you opt for covers the marketing goals you want to achieve. Once your business grows, you will reevaluate whether the free tier is still working, and if not, you can upgrade to paid versions with more comprehensive features.
