Once a South African online store is set up and operating cleanly, the next problem is bigger and less forgiving. Traffic. Not any traffic, but the specific kind of visitors who are ready to buy, arriving cheaply enough that the business grows without the marketing spend eating the margin. This is where most stores get stuck, and where they either learn to acquire customers profitably or slowly close.

This session covers growth in the practical sense: which channels realistically move orders for a South African small store, how to test them without wasting cash, and how to know what is working before you double down.

The channels that actually produce orders here

Four consistently work at small business scale. Organic search, which is slow to build and cheap to run once ranking. Paid social, which produces quick results and can burn cash if unmanaged. Email to existing customers, which is the highest return channel almost every online store underuses. And word of mouth, driven by the experience the customer had, which is why operations quality is a marketing decision.

Broader retail context is published quarterly by Statistics South Africa, and it is worth reading occasionally to understand where consumer spend is actually going in your category rather than in the category everybody is talking about.

What this session covers

  • Organic search for online stores. Product page titles, product descriptions, category pages and the small technical items that decide whether Google shows you when somebody searches for what you sell.
  • Paid social done sensibly. Testing a channel with a small controlled budget, reading the results honestly, and killing what does not work quickly. Overspending on the wrong channel is the fastest way for a small store to lose money.
  • Email marketing that produces orders. A welcome series, an abandoned cart flow and a post purchase sequence. Three simple flows that quietly outperform daily manual campaigns.
  • Reviews and social proof. How to actually get customers to leave reviews, and where to place them on your site so they influence a buyer’s decision.
  • Marketplaces as a traffic source. Using them to acquire customers, then bringing those customers back to your own site for the repeat purchase. The trade off between reach and margin.
  • Measuring properly. Cost per order, cost per acquisition and repeat rate. The three numbers that tell you which channel earns more money than it costs.

The single unforgiving truth about paid ads

A store cannot outspend a weak offer. If the product is not something people want at the price you charge, no amount of ad budget will fix it. Owners who scale spend on an underperforming offer usually discover this expensively. Before you increase paid spend, prove that a small controlled test converts profitably, then scale that specific version. This one discipline is what separates the stores that grow from the ones that burn.

The second unforgiving truth is that traffic without operations is a trap. Doubling your orders when you cannot dispatch them on time damages the reviews and repeat rate you spent money to earn. Grow acquisition and fulfilment together.

Who should watch this session

  • Store owners with a working setup and modest orders, unsure which channel to invest in next.
  • Founders spending on paid ads and unable to say clearly whether the spend is profitable.
  • Owners whose organic traffic has plateaued and want to understand what levers are actually available.
  • Anyone using email only as broadcast campaigns and wanting to add automated flows.

Rules that still apply

Consumer protection obligations under the Consumer Protection Act, administered through the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, apply to every advertising claim you make. If a price, availability or specification changes, your ads and pages need to reflect it. On the customer data side, POPIA obligations through the Information Regulator apply to every email address and behaviour record you use for marketing. Both are administrative, both matter.

What to do after the session

Set up the three email flows this week: welcome, abandoned cart, post purchase. Even if your list is small, the flows work forever once built, and they compound with every new customer. Owners who ignore email leave meaningful money on the table.

Then pick one paid channel to test with a controlled small budget, and commit to killing it if it does not hit a target cost per order after two weeks. Our free templates and guides include marketing planning tools you can use to structure the test, and if a proven channel needs scaling, our business funding pages cover working capital options.

Frequently asked questions

What should a reasonable cost per order be?

It depends on your margin. The floor is that acquisition cost plus fulfilment cost must leave enough margin to make the sale worthwhile, including a share for reinvestment. If you cannot say your gross margin per order confidently, that is the first calculation, not the last.

How long before organic search starts producing orders?

Three to six months for meaningful movement on product pages, longer for category level rankings. Anyone promising faster is selling something.

Should I run ads if I have not made a sale yet?

Not usually. Get your first sales through direct outreach and organic effort so you know the offer converts. Paid ads amplify what already works; they do not fix what does not.

How often should I email my list?

The automated flows run themselves. Broadcast campaigns work at one to two a week for most stores. More than that risks unsubscribes without adding revenue.
