SEO is one of the cheapest ways to grow a South African business, and one of the most misunderstood. Owners spend money on agencies that promise page one rankings without saying for which words, or they publish content that reads well and never gets found because nothing points to it. The gap between doing something and doing something useful is where most small business SEO budgets get lost.

This session strips it back to a checklist you can actually work through. Not tricks, not tactics that stop working next quarter, but the fundamentals that decide whether Google can find, understand and recommend your business to somebody typing a real question into search.

What Google is actually looking for

Search has moved from keyword matching to trust. Google’s helpful content guidance spells it out: content written for people, by somebody with real expertise, on a site that treats visitors well, is what ranks. Everything else is decoration.

For a South African business, that means writing in a way that shows you actually operate here, that the advice matches the market, and that people would send your page to a friend rather than close it after ten seconds. The Search Central documentation is the official reference, and it is a better use of an hour than any blog post promising a shortcut.

The checklist this session works through

  • Keywords worth targeting. The difference between words people type when researching and words they type when ready to buy, and why small businesses should focus on the second group first.
  • Page titles and meta descriptions. The one line each page needs to earn its click from a search result, written by hand rather than left to defaults.
  • Content that ranks. Length matters less than depth. What “helpful content” looks like on a service page versus a guide, with real examples.
  • Internal linking. The most underused free lever in SEO. How to connect your own pages so authority flows to the ones you want to rank.
  • Local SEO for South African businesses. Google Business Profile, reviews, address consistency, and why local buyers behave differently from national ones.
  • Technical basics. Page speed, mobile experience and the small handful of technical items worth checking. Everything else is a distraction until these are right.

The truth about “SEO agencies” for small business

Most SEO retainers under a certain budget are recycled reports. You get a monthly document showing rankings for words nobody types, and no measurable change in enquiries. If you cannot see which pages moved, which words converted and which changes caused it, you are being sold activity rather than results.

You will get more out of doing the fundamentals yourself for six months, learning what actually matters for your business, and then hiring somebody specific to solve a specific problem. It is slower to start and cheaper to sustain.

Who should watch this session

  • Owners whose website was built years ago and has never brought in a lead.
  • Businesses paying an SEO retainer and unsure what it is actually delivering.
  • Local service providers whose competitors show up in map results and they do not.
  • Content creators publishing regularly with disappointing traffic.

What to do after the session

Set up Google Search Console for your site this week, because it is the only free source of honest data about what Google shows for you and what people click. Then pick the three pages that matter most commercially, and rewrite their titles and meta descriptions by hand.

After that, work through internal linking. Every important page on your site should be reachable from your home page in two clicks and should link out to related pages. Our free templates and guides include marketing planning tools, and if search brings the enquiries but your conversion is weak, our business funding pages cover working capital for the growth push.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take to work?

Realistic timelines are three to six months for meaningful movement, longer for competitive terms. Anyone promising results in four weeks is either lying or targeting terms nobody searches for.

Do I need to write a blog?

Only if you commit to doing it well. Three thin posts a week is worse for you than one considered piece a month. If you cannot sustain quality, focus on your service pages first.

What is a Google Business Profile and do I need one?

It is a free listing that appears in map searches and next to your business name in search. Any business with a location or a service area in South Africa should have one, verified.

Are backlinks still important?

Yes, but earning them by being useful beats buying them by a large margin. Paid links carry real risk with search engines and are not a shortcut worth taking.

Watch the session, then set up Search Console and rewrite three page titles this week. Join the community to compare notes with other owners doing their own SEO, or see the other sessions.
