DocFox, the Johannesburg fintech startup that simplified FICA document verification for South African financial firms, was acquired by global KYC platform nCino and now operates under the name nCino KYC.
From startup to acquisition
DocFox was founded by Ryan Canin and Gian Luca Cantarin to help accountable institutions, banks, law firms and estate agents, manage the process of requesting, verifying and storing FICA compliance documents electronically instead of relying on paper-based checks. An early partnership with global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright helped the startup scale beyond its original South African client base.
Where the business is now
DocFox has since been absorbed into nCino’s KYC Africa division and rebranded as nCino KYC. The platform still serves the same core market, accountable institutions needing to meet Financial Intelligence Centre Act requirements, and has expanded its partnerships, including a continuing agreement with the Law Society of South Africa to support FICA compliance for legal practitioners.
Why FICA compliance software still matters
The Financial Intelligence Centre issued Directive 11 of 2026 on 31 March, adding new requirements for specified accountable institutions. Firms still need to register with the Financial Intelligence Centre, maintain a Risk Management and Compliance Programme and keep staff trained on FICA processes, exactly the compliance gap DocFox was built to close in 2016.
