It’s easy to take access to electricity for granted, many people forget that there are children, many from low-income households who are not on the power-grid.
One of the biggest impacts of a lack of electricity is on the education of these children – many who would love the privilege of burning the midnight oil, but simply cannot afford to do so because they are faced with rationing candles.
Yesterday we featured Reabetswe Ngwane and Thato Kgatlhanye, from the township of Rustenburg who are behind the green startup, Repurpose Schoolbags, an initiative that creates solar-powered schoolbags that transform into a light at night, allowing children to study after dark.
The duo say the inspiration behind this project was trying to come up with a solution to the lack of electricity, while also looking after the environment.
