How to choose a business bank account

Customer satisfaction rankings tell you how people feel about their bank, which is not the same as what it will cost your business. For a business account the comparison that matters is the total monthly cost given how you actually transact, and that differs enormously between a cash-heavy retailer and a service business invoicing ten clients a month.

Work out your own transaction pattern first, then compare.

Compare on your actual transaction pattern

Monthly account fee, per-transaction charges, cash deposit fees, card acceptance rates and the cost of receiving payments. A retailer banking cash daily and a consultant receiving ten transfers a month should reach different answers.

Cash deposit fees in particular are where cash-based businesses lose money quietly, because the charge is proportional and recurs on every deposit.

Lending appetite matters more than the fee

The bank that gives you the cheapest account is not necessarily the one that will lend to you in three years. Some banks have genuine small business lending and franchise finance divisions; others effectively do not.

If you expect to need finance, ask what they actually lend to businesses like yours before opening, rather than discovering it when you apply.

Practical things that cost time

Whether you can open and manage the account without repeated branch visits, how quickly payments clear, whether the app does what you need, and how reachable support is when something goes wrong.

Integration with your accounting software is worth real money, because manually re-entering transactions is an ongoing cost that exceeds most fee differences.

What you need to open one

Company registration with current annual returns at the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, identity documents for directors, proof of address and usually proof of business address.

A business account is not optional if you intend to grow: corporate contracts, funding applications and clean records all require one, and trading through a personal account makes proving turnover later close to impossible. Providers must be authorised, which you can check with the Financial Sector Conduct Authority.
