Sibusiso Ngwenya (27), owner of the sock brand, Skinny Sbu Socks has sparked fresh and much-needed discussion about the struggles of being an entrepreneur in South Africa and debates about whether SA entrepreneurs have realistic expectation of funders. We have heard responses from entrepreneurs, business veterans and others in the local entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Ngwenya appeared on an SABC news show earlier this month, asking for R 5 million to help keep his business afloat. On the show he shared why his business hadn’t done well in the past year and that he was in need of funding.
In his response to Ngwenya’s trending interview Mushambi Mutuma, who is a thought leader and speaker on business and entrepreneurship, does not mince his words, saying entrepreneurs need to stop asking for money or expecting it, and advises them to rather “sell your way to the funds you need”.
Mutuma is a tech entrepreneur and speaker and founder of Altivex Creative Foundry, an organisation working to African engagement in tech and digital industries.
